THE CHALLENGE...

Due to the current covid19 situation, football has been completely destroyed on a global scale. However, it is confirmed the Bundesliga will now return on the 16th May.

A lot of football fans are eager to watch live matches again, but don't necessarily follow German football. So the challenge is to provide a central information source for new German football watchers that will quickly educate them about the Bundesliga.

This will predominately be used by UK based football fans awaiting the return of live football, but should be suitable for use by all.

They can quickly search through team & player profiles, the league table & stats, as well as fixtures & results.

If they understand and know more about what they're watching, hopefully this will increase their enjoyment.

01 - the discovery phase

Conducting surveys helped me gain a deeper understanding of my potential users, my main goals were to find out...

analysis.png
  • What level is their general football and Bundesliga knowledge at?

  • What areas would they like to know more about?

  • How regularly do they watch live football and how could their enjoyment be enhanced?

  • What kind of features in a mobile football app would they be interested in?

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

As is known, the sports/media/betting industry is very fast paced, ever evolving and notoriously competitive. The nature of the industry gives the need for constant improvement, so making sure the product is the best it can be and most importantly giving the customer what they want and need is paramount.

So lets find out what the other apps on the market are like, this will give me an idea of the basic features needed, what might be missing from existing apps, their strengths & weaknesses and some general inspiration for my own application.

02 - defining the problem

"Due to the current covid-19 situation, football has been completely destroyed on a global scale. Leagues were suspended in practically every country and in some whole, seasons have been cancelled!"

"Football fans are desperately missing their favourite sport and don't know when they might get to watch a LIVE football match again! However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel... this week it was confirmed that Germany will allow the return of the Bundesliga on the 16th May and live football will return to our TV screens."

"But the average UK based football fan has no knowledge of the Bundesliga whatsoever. They NEED a quick reference point to read up on clubs, players, the league situation and receive live match & goal updates. This will INCREASE their enjoyment of what they're watching BECAUSE they will be more knowledgeable."

"WE WILL KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE when we see a large amount of app downloads and positive reviews from our users."

KNOWN PROBLEMS

  • People don’t have enough time to do research.

  • People don't know who the teams or players are that they're watching.

  • Football fans like to feel immersed in the game & atmosphere.

  • People like to know more about what they're watching and how it affects the league overall.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

A potential solution for our problem is a Bundesliga football app which will provide a simple and central information source for new German football watchers, which will quickly educate them about the Bundesliga.

They can quickly search for and browse through teams, players, the current league table, fixtures & results and make use of a live match and goal service.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Having finalised the initial problem, potential solution and combined this with our market and competitive research, we are now able to draw up definitive lists of business and system requirements from which we can base our designs on.

Based on the findings from our user surveys during the discovery phase, I was able to create a single persona...

Jim 'the football fan'.

In the future there is scope for other relevant and more in depth personas to be created, e.g 'the football gambler', but currently Jim fulfils the basic needs of our users.

USER PERSONAS, JOURNEYS, FLOWS

Jim - the football fan.png

Whilst getting to understand Jim's needs as a user and a football fan/watcher I was able to create two user journeys for him, one for before the game starts and the other during the game.

Again I created a set of task flows, one for before the game and the other for during...

03 - DEVELOPING THE SOLUTION

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Based on all the user research done and information architecture principles, I constructed a basic site map for the application.

Normally we might have gone deeper into this decision, e.g. using open card sorting to evaluate how the site map matches up with potential user flows, etc. However, a design was made which I felt met all our needs and I didn't feel deeper investigation was needed.

EARLY SKETCHING & WIRE-FRAMING

Now that we had the initial site/data map for the app set out, I could begin putting my thoughts onto paper in the form of some early pen & paper based sketches. These would then be transformed into sets of lo-fidelity wireframes.

To help put these into context, below are the screen designs for the common 'Pre-Game' and 'In-Play' research tasks our user Jim would most likely be completing...

USABILITY TESTING

Basic usability testing and preference sessions were conducted to find any errors and issues early on. I asked a selection of potential users to attempt the 'Pre Game' and 'In-Play' research tasks.

The data and feedback received during testing rounds, helped in identifying problem areas, and informing design choices during iterations.

HI-FIDELITY SCREENS & PROTOTYPE

At last, we are left with the outcome! A set of high-fidelity screens and an interactive prototype.

The app provides new football fans with a simple and central information source for the German Bundesliga, which will quickly educate them about the league.

They can quickly search for and browse through teams, players, the current league table, fixtures & results and make use of a live match and goal service.
